PEER PERSPECTIVES AT BHIVA 2023

‘Life starts at 40 61 years’ took place at the spring BHIVA 2023 conference.

In this session, we explored how the needs of the ageing HIV population are impacting our healthcare systems, and the strategies that could make a difference. The Peer Perspectives panel, chaired by Professor Mark Nelson, also shared their diverse experiences and personal insights on clinical practice, research and policy.

The Peer Perspectives panel is carefully chosen for the diverse perspectives they bring. A broad cross-section of experts from across the HIV sector, ensured a lively and engaging discussion about ageing with HIV and the challenges of individualised care.

Here's an overview of the session:

  • Paper discussion: Adapting to the evolving needs of an ageing population

Dr Ming Lee, Consultant HIV Physician at Imperial College London, led a critical overview of the Lancet study, “How health systems can adapt to a population ageing with HIV and comorbid disease” by J Kiplagat et al. (Kiplagat J, et al. Lancet HIV. 2022;9(4):e281-e292.)
This was followed by a panel discussion of key study highlights and an exploration of key healthcare and patient challenges to explore in the next decade.
  • Managing complex cases from expectation to clinical practice

Dr Lauren Walker, Consultant Clinical Pharmacologist and General Physician at Liverpool University Hospital, shared her experience and learnings from managing the journey of complex non-HIV patient cases.
Dr Walker also led the panel in a debate on evolving healthcare provision for an ageing and multimorbid HIV population.
  • Open floor and Q&A

The audience joined our panel in an open discussion on the key challenges in HIV care over the decade and how future planning could help healthcare professionals address the evolving needs of patients.
