POSITIVE PERSPECTIVES CROSS SECTIONAL GLOBAL SURVEY

Background

The Positive Perspectives 2 global survey was run by ViiV Healthcare in collaboration with an international, multi-disciplinary Advisory Committee of experts, including HIV clinicians, people living with HIV and patient group representatives. This explored how care and treatment affect the health and wellbeing of PLHIV beyond viral suppression and provided in-depth insights into the challenges that impact the QoL of PLHIV.

The study is helping us to understand and address the unmet treatment needs and challenges faced by PLHIV. The Innovation and Implementation Science team primarily supported with the questionnaire design and the analysis and dissemination of data, particularly relating to a subgroup analysis relating to those ageing with HIV.

Design

Cross-sectional international survey of individuals with HIV-1+ diagnosis, taking ARV drug therapy, and between 18 and 84 years of age. The pooled sample size from 24 countries was 2,112 individuals. Snowball sampling with recruiting from HIV clinics, HIV online groups and social media were used to recruit individuals to participate in this survey.

Conclusions

  • Of older adults living with HIV, 23% reported suboptimal health and 26% reported optimal health on all domains. Approximately half the population reported results within these two extremes.
  • Geographic disparities exist in self-reported health status. These differences highlight the need for tailoring treatment to narrow inequalities.
  • Groups with worst perceived health included those reporting ≥2 comorbidities, suboptimal adherence, and those dissatisfied with treatment.
  • Holistic approach to care requires seeking improvements in all aspects of health and considering patients as a whole. Quality communication is needed to alleviate mental distress, which may not be readily discernable to HCPs.

This randomized controlled trial demonstrated how a series of brief online mindfulness audio lessons improves mental health outcomes among older PLHIV (aged 50+) who report some degree of loneliness.
